It is a quiet weekend ahead this weekend with only one senior team in action. Our Seconds kick off the Junior Cup campaign with an away trip to Old Christians on Sunday at 2pm.
Our underage however will be a hive of activity as usual. Special mention must go to our u14s Blue Team who are through to their second League final in as many years. In a repeat of last year’s final they face Young Munster and if that match was anything to go by this one is sure to be a cracker! Head along to St. Munchins to offer them your support!
We would like to wish Jake Flannery and Craig Casey all the best on their u20s starts tonight v England in Irish Independent Park. The match kicks off at 7.15 and will be broadcast on RTE 2 from 7pm.
AIL Round 11
Shannon 7 Garryowen 28
It wasn’t the result our Firsts were hoping for as Garryowen came away with the spoils of last week’s local derby in Thomond Park. Miserable conditions made handling the ball difficult and Garryowen capitalised on any Shannon errors to get points on the board. Garryowen bagged the bonus while we had to settle for a late Ronan Coffey try and Ben Daly conversion. It was fantastic to see Ronan back after injury and all eyes now turn to the next fixture away to Lansdowne on the 16th of February. We will be running a supporter’s bus to the match so keep that in mind over the break!
The result sees us move down a spot on the table to 5th. Find the updated table below.
Gleeson League
Shannon 22 Old Crescent 15
Another week and another win for our Thirds who played Old Crescent in Crescent Comp last Saturday. As the rain battered down, Shannon got down to business and came away from the match with a three try haul. In an entertaining game, Crescent kept the pressure on until the very end but Shannon held tough and came away eventual winners. Tries came from Paul Curtis, Ben Sargent and Dara O’Doherty with Ben adding the rest of the points by way of conversions and a penalty. Our Thirds have a welcome weekend off this week and will be happy to hold their position on top of the table.
Donal Walsh
Shannon 34 Garryowen 38
It was heartbreak for our u20s who put on arguably the best performance of the weekend in Garryowen last Saturday. Down to 13 men for the second half due to injury, Shannon put on a fantastic display. They were 22-5 up just coming up to half time but Garryowen were awarded a penalty try at the close of the first half to narrow the gap to 22-12. Having lost players in the second half, Shannon kept the pressure on and went 27-19 ahead but as time wore on Garryowen took their scores well to come away eventual winners despite a late effort from Glean Clancy who scored in the corner. All in all it was a great match and a fantastic display of the talent our u20s panel possess. Shannon scores came from Thomas Ahern x 2, Jack O’Mahoney, Sean Elland and Glen Clancy. Alan Kiely provided the rest of the scores.
Underage Roundup
Our Underage produced some brilliant results last weekend!
Shannon U11’s both Black & Blue teams were on the road to Thomond and Abbeyfeale. They both recorded 3 wins from 3. Ken Costelloe led a fine rendition of “There is an Isle”.
Shannon U13s also had a big win at the weekend as they took on Scariff in Coonagh.
Well done to Shannon U15s who had a big win v Garryowen while our U18s had a hard fought draw with Cashel/Fethard 22-22.
